Things that happen with and for global brands (say the Fortune 3500 or so) don't inherently make sense for everyone else. There are maybe 15% of workers in those big, recognizable brands. The rest of us work in a less rarified setting.

What's happened is that those large enterprises have fallen way, way behind in their approaches to work. They may never catch up to newer ideas. That's because those big companies are/were built on industrial models of work.

21st Century work is smaller and more artisan. That means that it will have a haphazard feel to it. The answer isn't to correct those imperfections but to celebrate them, to make them even better at their haphazard-ness.

A bigger question is something like "What will we make up as work when the robots are doing all of the drudgery (and most work is drudgery for most people)?"

Don't get me wrong, the big cos will be around for a long time. And, their employees will have the rarest of commodities, a job. The rest of us will be designing our lives in other ways.

Today, barely 50% of the working age population of the US is working in any traditional sense. In other words, the change is well under way. The move to non-job lifestyles began with Microsoft Office.

So, I bet the next frontier is tools that help to create workJohn Sumserhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18044724316038558352noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1859914187193601049.post-1243253124160393522013-03-10T20:08:14.659-07:002013-03-10T20:08:14.659-07:00Of course you love Sorkin. I've been worried about Mr. Obama's ability to lead the country in a positive direction, but have begun to believe that no president will be able to achieve great change in our country without the enthusiastic and powerful participation of the citizens of America. I'm really concerned about the corporate control of the country and Congress and have begun to feel that it doesn't matter who gets elected. I'd love it if you could convince me that there's hope for our country! As always, I'm enjoying reading your thoughts. The government, mass media, and all involved should act on the simple saying "it's all about attitude". If you aren't secure in your job you you will squirrel away every penny for the rainy day ! As an American citizen living overseas I am struck by the lengths that other governments go to create good jobs for their citizens and the efforts put in place by the US government to damage the economic climate that should foster job creation for the American People. The list of sins is long and I will not cover the gamut but it starts with an inferior educational system at the primary and secondary level, a very regressive federal corporate tax system and a employment law system at primarily at the state level that encourages litigation of almost all disputes. Here in Denmark the number one job of the government is to create good jobs and ensure the employability of the work force. The biggest issue is not enough labor to meet the needs in the marketplace, which is a good problem to have.

Overall the contrast is striking and the danes have it right !

Bill AllenAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09160566103540990848noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1859914187193601049.post-43775924374339144282009-02-11T06:13:00.000-08:002009-02-11T06:13:00.000-08:00I agree Rusty...I fear that the R's in Congress ha...I agree Rusty...I fear that the R's in Congress have sadly misinterpreted the message of their election losses in Nov. I recently had a chance to listen to Lincoln Chafee (former moderate republican US Senator) speak about his days in the Senate (1999 - 2007). He was one of 5 moderates in the party and his story about how marginalized they were amazed me. It was nice to see 3 of them still fighting this week on the stimulus. If you get the chance, check out Chafee's recent book: Against the Tide. Very interesting view into Senate politics. - Mike BousquetMTBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14914908616221859745noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1859914187193601049.post-52741376938125562002009-02-05T06:12:00.000-08:002009-02-05T06:12:00.000-08:00Post Script - later in the day of this post, Tom D...Post Script - later in the day of this post, Tom Daschle and the woman who was to be the Performance Czar both withdrew themselves from consideration and President Obama went on every news program to apologize for backing them too long after it was discovered that they had tax issues.
